What’s in a name?

to me it is skiing. it is the only way i’ve known it. i have a strong relationship to it that compels me to find meaning in all that came before. i took it on as a burden of responsibility to vigorously edit the form and add whatever makes sense to me through the lens of many roles i have played in life so far.

there are a few people left who can show it to you [note: it will be a diluted version of the tired old way (that’s why it “died”)]

-> all that we present is an updated synthesis for you to figure out your way…

🏔️ The Mountain is watching everyone who comes… 👁️

There are many movements that can be learned that are delegated to the previous iterations of the 70’s-90’s ski ballet. we as a school have a particular sort of way of approaching the mountain so as to be in its good grace. this means that we stay in a constant state of play. adhering to past patterns of competition and gross deviation from the source material is what we are not. Elaborate? Why yes…

our common practice is to be consistent in having instant grasp of the basic movements -from there a place of freedom exists that cannot endure a practice of seeking out bigger tricks and danger - if you really want that then this isn’t for you -> go to the first few pages of Google and you’ll see it there

we have distilled the steps of learning into simple, clear, and safe experience that can be shared + practiced on your own or with friends

there are numerous references and nods to past achievements in this unique genre of sport that for moment in time dominated winter $ports media

outside of the rules and status based focus of freestyle’s latter history - i found freedom to let go and thereby create new ways of moving with gravity - this is the first trick that i can truly call my own -

having come up through the tail end of the hot dog era and eventually competed at the highest levels of the sport until it’s demise - i have seen all the good and the bad and believed all i was told because i was just a kid. through a long period without any feedback i developed + designed a mutation of what most people remember as “ski ballet” or acro

i’d say the most important decision in the creative process has been to integrate the poles in every manner possible so as to embody a martial artist on skis - yes, this is a form of martial arts (it fits the criteria + it allowed me to overcome the status quo bullies) and it is actually something new in the world for anyone who wants to wake up your senses and feel like your true self

Basic Tricks

18 simple and fun movements that are the base level of difficulty for anyone to learn

these are broken into 3 distinct categories of motions

  1. one ski action

  2. rotations or spins

  3. crossing one ski over + steps

all of these basic 18 movements are really just consonants and syllables that compose your words in a sentence when you have achieved a certain degree of ease with their use

they are designed to connect and flow into the next trick seemlessly. with consistent practice and play with these tricks one will arrive at a point when the movements happen by themselves - no cognitive choice per se but a heightened state of awareness brought about by the force of gravity acting upon you as you play along as long as your body compels you to stop or you run out of slope. no really it works like that…

tumbling

one difference with our approach and what you may see from way way back is the return to getting more body contact with the snow

in order to tap into flow and the moment one must be ready for whatever may come - this involves getting acquainted + proficient with tumbling at speeds - relaxing and enjoying the spectacle of an automated body recovery - yup you will get into great shape in learning this art form >> core strength is inevitable with this practice…
